Review: "Hatchet Island," Paul Doiron

By Paul Carrier

Prolific author Paul Doiron, former editor in chief of Down East magazine and a registered Maine guide, is back with the 13th entry in his mystery series featuring intrepid, risk-taking Maine game warden Mike Bowditch.

Elevated to the rank of investigator within the Warden Service, Bowditch and his girlfriend, Stacey Stevens, find themselves flitting from island to island off the coast of Maine in search of the killer (or killers) who murdered two researchers at a seabird sanctuary and injured a third.

The case, of course, is under the primary jurisdiction of the Maine State Police. But Bowditch has a knack for weaseling his way into high-profile criminal investigations that, time after time, benefit from his involvement.

Hatchet Island, a taut, fast-paced novel with an intriguing setting and memorable characters, is no exception. But be forewarned. Hatchet and its neighboring islands offer anything but a tourist's dream of an idyllic summer getaway.
