Summers is an award-winning illustrator who uses an artistic technique known as
scratchboard, which
Wikipedia describes as a form of direct engraving in which "the artist
scratches off dark ink to reveal a white or colored layer beneath." In
addition to other subjects, Summers’ work includes scratchboard
illustrations of authors and writers.
