Review: "Harmless as Doves," P. L. Gaus

By Kate Johnson

Harmless as Doves by P. L. Gaus is an intriguing murder mystery with an unusual setting: a sheltered Amish community in the hills of Ohio -- a simple place that has never seen a day of real trouble.

But when Crist Burkholder goes to Bishop Leon Shetler and confesses to murdering Crist's fiancee's unwelcome suitor, uncouth “English” (that is, non-Amish) police must get involved, and they reveal a much more deeply-rooted conspiracy than anyone would have expected -- even in the morally bankrupt “English” world.

The consequences of this subterfuge, at first contained by just a few members of the community, soon rock the entire Amish population in a plot-twisting story that will hold your rapt attention -- that is, if you can follow it.
