The John Newbery Medal is a literary award given by the American Library Association (ALA) to the author of "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." Named for John Newbery, an 18th-century English publisher, the Newbery has been awarded since 1922, making it the oldest children's book award in the world. Eligibility is limited to American citizens or residents. The Newbery and the Caldecott Medal, also awarded by the ALA, are considered the two most prestigious prizes for children's literature in the United States.
