Caldecott Medal: picture books

Awarded by the American Library Association (ALA), the Caldecott Medal recognizes the preceding year's "most distinguished American picture book for children,” beginning with 1937 publications. It is awarded to illustrators, and is named for Randolph Caldecott, a 19th-century English illustrator. The Caldecott Medal and the Newbery Medal, also awarded by the ALA, are the most prestigious American children's book awards.
