Review: "Fools and Mortals," Bernard Cornwell

By Paul Carrier

A departure from novelist Bernard Cornwell's traditional focus on military history, Fools and Mortals takes a suspenseful, sometimes comical look at the ruthlessly competitive and violent world of William Shakespeare's London.

It does so from the perspective of the bard's likable younger brother Richard, a struggling actor out to make his mark while coping with his more successful brother's condescension and self-importance.

A prolific writer, Cornwell is best known for several series, including 22 novels featuring Richard Sharpe, an English soldier during the Napoleonic Wars.
